Keenan Allen to Record 60+ Receiving Yards (+119)
If Keenan Allen is supposed to be washed up at this stage of his career, he did not get the message. During the season-opening victory over the Chiefs last week, Allen led the Chargers with 10 targets and pulled in seven receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown. He was also targeted six times in Justin Herbert’s first 18 pass attempts.
Allen will now carry this effort into the matchup with the Raiders, who looked vulnerable defending the pass in their season-opener. They pulled out a 20-13 victory over the Patriots in Week 1 but gave up 287 passing yards to Drake Maye. Kayson Boutte and Hunter Henry each tallied 66+ receiving yards in the matchup, with three different pass catchers pulling in six receptions. Las Vegas ranks 20th in the NFL in yards allowed per game and 27th in passing yards conceded, albeit in a small sample. They also limited New England to just 60 rushing yards in Week 1.
The Chargers limited Herbert’s passing attempts in the early parts of last season, but they are now giving him a green light to air it out. He threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns in Week 1, with three different pass catchers recording 68+ receiving yards. This feels like the direction the Chargers offense is heading, and the time to get involved is now. Allen may not be quite the receiver he once was, but there is a clear trust from Herbert, and he fills a stylistic need in the slot among the Chargers’ wide receiving group.
Expect him to remain involved this week and be a focus on key third downs and crucial plays throughout. The surehandedness he possesses and his strong frame are a necessary complement to Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston. Allen averages 75.7 receiving yards per game across his time with the Chargers and averaged 95.6 receiving yards per game in the 2023 season with the same quarterback at the helm. Look for him to build off his strong Week 1 start and eclipse 60+ receiving yards again tonight.
Kennan Allen Anytime Touchdown (+225)
While McConkey and Johnston will likely make up the bulk of the over-the-middle production, the attention Herbert paid to Allen in key spots is notable. Six of his seven catches last week went for either a first down or a touchdown, including the 11-yard touchdown he logged. Dating back to Herbert’s first season in 2020, Allen has 26 touchdowns in 54 games with the Chargers as well as 67 total in his career.
Even during his lone season in Chicago last year, Allen pulled in a team-high seven receiving touchdowns while missing a pair of games. His 6-foot-2 frame is a weapon around the goal line and will be called upon whenever the situation aligns. He also has had some strong games against the Raiders throughout the years, with 106 catches for 1,178 receiving yards and eight touchdowns across 18 meetings. This looks to be a more respectable Raiders squad than several Allen faced throughout his career, but that may only crank up the intensity of the AFC West rivalry.
Allen still looked to have plenty in the tank during his opening week performance. But if there is one area he should be expected to remain active as he fades into his twilight years, it is in the red zone. Count on him remaining a staple of the offense around the goal line since taking the +225 swing on an anytime touchdown is worth a play tonight.
