SAN FRANCISCO — The Pirates lineup will have a different look, as they open a series this weekend with the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.
This afternoon they placed Jake Mangum on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 6) with a left hamstring strain and recalled Nick Yorke from Triple-A Indianapolis.
With a left-handed starter (Robbie Ray) on the mound for San Francisco, Yorke was in the starting lineup and playing first base.
Mangum was a late scratch from Thursday’s series finale in Arizona with the hamstring issue. Apparently it’s serious enough to warrant time on the IL.
It wasn’t a long stay in the Minor Leagues for Yorke, who was optioned postgame May 1.
In 23 games with the big club this season, Yorke, 24, hit .221 with a .617 OPS, three doubles, a home run, six RBI, seven walks and six runs scored. The Pirates like Yorke’s ability to hit left-handed pitching, though he has a .620 OPS against southpaws in 2026 compared to .615 versus righties.
Yorke had a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored in three Triple-A games.
Mangum has hit .260 in 30 MLB games this season with a .621 OPS. The switch-hitter was batting .295 with two RBIs, five walks, four stolen bases and nine runs scored over his past 18 games.
How does Yorke fit? He may get more outfield time with Mangum on the IL. But he gives the Pirates another option in the infield against left-handed pitching and someone who could contribute in late-game situations.
