South Carolina State University’s homecoming draws generations of alumni, boosting local businesses with full hotels and increased sales.
The influx of visitors benefits local businesses across the city. Hotels fill up, restaurants see larger crowds, and vendors report increased sales.
“Enjoying the economic growth of everything that’s been happening and allowing entrepreneurship and things to help the community and give back locally to everybody and the students so they can thrive,” said Dante Champagne, a local vendor.
During homecoming, the economic impact is clear. Vendors see lines of customers and a surge in demand for their products.
“It’s bringing, as you can see, like a huge audience. People like different wings. They want to try different types of wings, so it’s having a big impact on us. We’re having fun with it,” said Nigel George, a quick-serve vendor.
Local leaders call homecoming one of the biggest economic boosts of the year. For students, the weekend is also about honoring the legacy of the university and celebrating their place in it.
“Man, it feels really good, you know, just to have everybody come back home and just to come together, have fun, just think about old times, and be around the family,” said Bryce McIntosh, a SC State student.
