An early-morning explosion inside a Harvard Medical School building in Boston appears to have been intentional, officials said Saturday.
Around 2:50 a.m., a Harvard University police officer responded to a fire alarm at the Goldenson Building at 220 Longwood Ave., according to a statement from the Harvard University Police Department. When the officer arrived, two unidentified individuals were seen running from the building. The officer attempted to stop them before heading inside to investigate and check on the alarm.
Once inside, the officer found evidence of an explosion in an area on the building’s fourth floor, police said. The Boston Fire Department’s arson unit later determined the blast appeared to have been deliberately set.
Boston police officers conducted a sweep of the building to check for any additional devices but did not find any, officials said. No injuries were reported.
The Harvard University Police Department said it is working with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident. Authorities did not immediately release further details about the two people seen fleeing the scene or the possible motive.
