Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Morgan State Bears and the Delaware State Hornets.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
More importantly, Morgan’s wins lately have looked like actual offense, with 82 against Delaware State, 90 against South Carolina State, 90 against Norfolk State, and 70 against Coppin. Delaware State, meanwhile, has spent most of the past two weeks trying to survive in the high-50s and low-60s.
That gap starts with the math. Morgan is simply the more functional scoring team. TeamRankings gives the Bears the better offensive efficiency, eFG%, 2-point percentage, 3-point percentage, free-throw percentage, offensive rebounding rate, and turnover rate in this matchup, and ESPN’s team comparison is just as blunt: Morgan averages 75.4 points per game to Delaware State’s 61.0, shoots 43% from the field to the Hornets’ 39%, and creates more ball movement at 13.3 assists per game versus 10.6. The free-points lane is where this thing starts to feel like a tournament favorite instead of a random MEAC quarterfinal. Morgan gets to the line at a serious clip with a 0.420 FTA/FGA, 24.4 free-throw attempts per game, and 18.1 makes per game, all while converting 74.3%. Delaware State’s offensive profile is much thinner at a 42.6% eFG, 28.9% from three, 42.3% from two, and a 17.4% turnover rate. In a neutral-site game where half-court possessions tighten up, that is a rough offensive skeleton to trust.
Morgan has several creators, not just one guard improvising the evening. Alfred Worrell Jr. leads the Bears at 17.4 points per game, has drilled 79 threes, shoots 88.8% at the line, and earned All-MEAC recognition; Elijah Davis adds 13.7 points and 6.0 assists per game and also made an All-MEAC team, giving Morgan a true organizer at the point of attack. Rob Lawson brings another 12.7 points and 4.0 assists a night, so this is a three-guard scoring and playmaking structure, not a one-man show. The recent form is even louder: Worrell dropped 25 in the last meeting with Delaware State, 23 against South Carolina State, and 20 against Coppin; Davis hung 15 points and 15 assists on Delaware State, then followed with 10 assists against South Carolina State; Eugene Alvin has become a real interior scoring pressure point with 19 against Delaware State and 20 against South Carolina State.
Delaware State has one clear headliner in Ponce James, who averaged 13.6 points and 3.4 assists, shot 85.9% from the line, and made the All-MEAC second team. But behind him, the offense gets shaky fast. Miles Webb is efficient at 56.5% from the field and just scored 21 in the win over UMES, yet the Hornets still do not have Morgan’s creator depth, and their recent weekly honors note on James was telling: over Delaware State’s final two conference games, he totaled just 21 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and five steals combined, solid work but not the kind of takeover signal that makes a seven-seed dog suddenly feel structurally sound.
Delaware State vs. Morgan State pick, best bet
Delaware State can still dirty the game up. The Hornets average 8.0 steals per game, sit on the positive side of turnover margin, and in the February loss at Morgan they still generated 21 points off turnovers and 38 points in the paint. In the first meeting, they turned the game into a whistle-and-volume slog, taking 39 free throws and winning the glass 39-32. Morgan is also foul-prone enough to invite trouble here; TeamRankings shows the Bears allowing an opponent 0.510 FTA/FGA, which is a flashing fragility light in any dog-spread discussion. That is why the total is not the clean way to attack this game. Cheap points exist on both branches. Delaware State can create runouts and free throws, and Morgan’s own stripe volume can pull a sloppy game over the number without either offense really humming. But that same two-game sample is also the case for laying it: Delaware State already won chunks of the turnover game, won a foul game, got paint production, and still lost both meetings.
Morgan is not some jet-start team that has to ambush this matchup in the opening eight minutes. Its season splits point to better late scoring, with 32.5 first-half points per game and 39.3 after the break, while Delaware State sits at 26.4 in first halves and 32.5 in second halves. The actual head-to-heads tell the same story. Morgan led the first meeting 44-38 at halftime and barely survived. In the second meeting, the Bears led only 34-33 at the break, then detonated for a 48-35 second half. That is the profile of a favorite whose edge grows through depth, cleaner shotmaking, and a better free-throw backbone over 40 minutes.
Morgan State -2.5 is the right side, and it stays playable to -3. The one thing that beats it is the same thing that has kept Delaware State semi-alive all year: chaos plus whistles. If the Hornets win the live-ball turnover battle and turn this into another 30-plus free-throw night, the cover gets sweaty. But the cleaner offense, deeper guard structure, stronger free-point profile, and second-half scoring shape still point to the Bears advancing.
