The Will County Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place early Monday for Frankfort Square and nearby areas following a police pursuit with a search underway for five men, “possibly armed with handguns,” that fled the scene of a crash.

“The Will County Sheriff’s Office is currently issuing a shelter in place for the immediate area of Harlem Ave. and Vollmer Rd in Frankfort Square,” an alert from the sheriff’s office said. “Please remain in your homes with your doors locked as law enforcement officers are active in the area following a police pursuit. We will update you when more information is available.”

The Village of Tinley Park also issued an alert for residents Monday morning, saying police in the south suburbs were searching for five men that may be armed with handguns.

At 6:23 a.m., the Village of Tinley Park Public Safety posted a message to Facebook saying police were assisting Matteson Police near Vollmer Road and Harlem Avenue. According to the post, officials were searching for five men in all black clothing that were “possible armed with handguns.”

“Subjects fled westbound on foot after an accident,” the post said.

An update at 6:50 a.m. from Tinley Park said one of the subjects was taken into custody, with four subjects “still possibly on foot in the area.”

The Frankfort Police Department also shared Tinley Park’s alert, saying there was an “active search.”

NBC 5’s Jenn Schanz warned commuters that a large police presence in the area could create backups and delays for morning rush hour.

No further details were provided. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
